Les pronoms remplacent un nom de personne ou de chose.

�Les pronoms compléments d’objet direct (CODs):

DIRECT OBJECTS - indicate the object of the action expressed by the verb

Sujet + verbe + quelqu'un/quelque chose (OBJET DIRECT)
eg. Je vois Amelie

Direct Objects:

refer to people or things (eg. Elle aime ses enfants)
are preceded by a definite article (eg. Je vois la voiture) OR a demonstratif (eg. ce)
are NOT preceded by prepositions. (eg. Je parle à Madison. A Madison is NOT a direct object)

�Direct Object Pronouns take the place of a direct object in a sentence.
The direct object pronouns are:

Me - me
You - te
He/One/It - le
She/It - la
Us - nous
You (pl) - vous
Them - les

Direct object pronouns are placed between the subject and the verb EXCEPT WHEN USED WITH THE AFFIRMED IMPERATIVE, in which case the tonic pronouns are used instead of the "me" and "te" forms and all pronouns are hyphenated to the end of the verb.
Examples:
Elle met les fleures sur la table.
- Elle les met sur la table.
Vous écrivez une lettre.
- Vous l'écrivez.
J'aime Alexi.
- Je l'aime.
Vous vous levez.
- Levez-vous!
Vous allez le surveiller.
- Surveillez-le!

eg. J'écris un texto à ma mère

NOTE: With certian verbs followed by the preposition à + name of a person, the indirect object pronouns are not used in fron of the verb. Rather, the preposition à is repeated with the emphatic pronoun (le pronom tonique)

- Il s’adresse à elle .
Je pense à Dion.
- Je pense à lui.

Les pronoms toniques:

Tonic (Emphatic) Pronouns replace the name of a person or animal in a sentence.
The tonic pronouns are:

Me - me
You - te
Him - lui
Her - elle
One - soi
Us- nous
You (pl) - vous
Them (m) - eux
Them (f) - elles

Tonic pronouns are used:

to place emphasis on the subject
eg. Lui, il aime manger. Moi, j'aime lire les romans.
in compound subjects
eg. Toi et moi, nous faisons le nécessaire
after a preposition
eg. Viens avec moi. Tu peux compter sur lui. C’est juste derrière vous.
after the negative "ne___que"
eg. Je n'ai vu que lui.
with "-même" to indicate "oneself"
eg. Elle aimerait mieux le faire elle-même.
after any relexive verb followed by à
eg. Le chat s’est habitué à moi.
with the expression "être à"
eg. Ce stylo est à moi!
with certian verbs that do not take indirect object pronouns when followed by the preposition à + name of a person (as mentioned above).
eg. Écris à moi si tu as des questions.

Le pronom "y":

Like an adverb, "y" replaces the names of places that are preceeded by a pronoun.

Sujet + verbe + preposition + nom de lieu [phrase remplacer par "y"]
eg. Je sors à la discothèque.

The pronoun "y" is placed between the subject and the verb
Examples:
Je vais à la plage
- J’y vais �
Elle interprète une pianiste dans le film
- Elle y interprète une pianiste
Like a pronoun, "y" replaces indirect objects that represent a thing.

Sujet + verbe + preposition + une chose [OBJET INDIRECT]
eg. Il a répondu à la question.

It is also used with verbs that utilise the preposition à at the end.

Sujet + [VERBE SUIVI PAR à] + ....
eg. Il faut s’habituer à toutes les exceptions aux règles grammaticales .

The pronoun "y" is placed between the subject and the verb.
Examples:
�Je m’intéresse beaucoup à la littérature.
- Je m’y intéresse beaucoup.
Il faut s’habituer à toutes les exceptions aux règles grammaticales
- Il faut s’y habituer

Le pronom "en":

The pronoun "en" replaces phrases and expressions beginning with "de". It is placed between the subject and the verb.

"En" is used:

to replace de + name of a thing
eg. J'ai besoin de quelques semaines de vacances = J'en ai besoin.
to replace infinitive + de
eg. Je mange du pain. = J'en mange.
to replace nouns preceeeded by an indefinite article
eg. J'ai offert un livre = J'en ai offert un.
with verbs followed by de
eg. Je n'ai pas l'habitude de le faire = Je n'en ai pas l'habitude.
with expressions formed with avoir/etre + de
eg. J'ai peur de chiens = J'en ai peur.
