| Antimicrobial drug | organic drug or a synthetic compound active against a microorganism |
| Antibiotic | substance produced by a microorganism that suppresses the activity of another organism |
| Bactericidal | drugs that kill organisms |
| Bacteriostatic | drugs that prevent an organism from replicating and/or growing |
| MIC | minimum inhibitory concentration -the lowest concentration of antibiotic that completely inhibits growth of the specific organism being tested |
| MBC | minimum bactericidal concentration -the lowest concentration of a n antibiotic where the bacteria are killed |
| Time-dependent drugs | drugs that are effective for the length of time the concentration is above the MIC |
| Concentration-dependent drugs | drugs that are effective if they reach a concentration required for killing the bacteria (~8-10x the MIC) |
