| Question | Answer |
| What are the three main types of rocks? | Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic |
| How long does it take to form a sedimentary rock? | Millions of years |
| How do you tell the age of the layers in a sedimentary rock? | Oldest at the bottom, newest at the top. |
| How are igneous rocks form? | Molten rock (magma) forms inside the earth. The magma cools and solidifies to make igneous rock |
| How are crystals formed? | Crystals form when the rock cools. The size depends on how quickly the magma cooled. The slower the cooling the larger the crystals, and vice versa. |
| Do igneous rocks contain fossils? | No, as any fossils in the original rock would have been melted down. |
| How are metamorphic rocks formed? | Earth movement causes rocks to be deeply buried or squeezed, and as a result the rocks are heated and put under great pressure. Minerals inside them change chemically therefore making metamorphic rocks. |
| What are the three types of weathering? | Chemical, Physical and Biological. (Chemical and Physical being the most important for this topic.) |
| How does the wind, rain and waves cause weathering? | Wind blows tiny grains of sand against a rock, slowly wearing it away (abrasion). Over a longer period of time, wind and rain also wear away rocks. |
| What are the stages of the rock cycle? | Rock weathers - rock erodes - sedimentary rock forms - burying and squeezing with heat pressure - metamorphic rock - rock melts - igneous rock - volcanic eruption |
