Question Answer
Natural Selection The process where organisms with traits better suited to their environment tend to survive and reproduce more successfully
Adaptation an inherited trait that improves the survival of a species
Evolution The gradual change and diversification of living organisms over time.
Species A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Mutation a change in the genetic material (DNA) of an organism. This change can be a mistake or error that alters the DNA sequence
Genetic Variation There are differences among individuals within the same species. Traits that are more favorable to a species are more likely to be passed on from generation to generation, increasing the species' chances of survival.
Environment the totality of surrounding conditions and elements that influence the survival and development of an organism or population
Survival of the Fittest the principle that animals and plants sutied to the conditions they live in are more likely to stay alive and produce other animals and plants than those that are not suited.
Trait a characteristic or quality of an organism (generally determined)
Inherited something passed down from parents to offspring through genes
Generation All of the offspring that are at the same stage of descent from a common ancestor. Mothers and daughters represent two separate generations.
Fossil the preserved remains or traces of ancient life that have been preserved in Earth's crust
Population A group of organisms of the same species located within the same geographical location.
Extinction the complete disappearance of a species from Earth
Homologous Structures similar body parts in different species that share a common ancestor, but they may have different functions
Embryonic Development the process of an embryo's growth and differentiation, turning a fertilized egg into a baby
Common Ancestor An organism that is related to two or more different species. It's the ancestor that all the species in question share, meaning they all descended from that same ancestor
Fossil Record The collection of fossils in the Earth's crust and their placement in chronological order
Fitness describes an individual's reproductive success and reflects how well an organism is adapted to its environment and to pass on its genes.
