| Acids | Substance with a pH less than 7. |
| Alkalis | Substances with a pH more than 7. Bases that dissolve in water. |

| Catalyst | A substance that speeds up a reaction without getting used up in the reaction or affecting the result. |

| Mole | The unit for amount of subtance. The molar mass is the relative formula mass of a substance in grams (g/mol). |
| Atom | The smallest particle of an element that can exist. |
| Molecule | Two or more atoms bonded together. Smallest unit of a chemical compound. |
| Compound | A thing that is composed of two or more separate elements. |
| Isotope | Two or more forms of the same element that contain equal numbers of protons but different numbers of neutrons in their nuclei. |
| Nanoparticles | Really tiny particles that are 1-100 nanometres across. |
