| Settlement | A place where people live. E..g hamlet , village, town or city. |
| Site | The land on which a settlement is built. |
| Situation | A settlements location relative to its surroundings. |
| Shape | The arrangement of buildings within a settlement. |
| Dispersed settlements | When buildings are spread out. There is usually no obvious centre. |
| Nucleated settlements | When buildings are grouped closely together. They often form at crossroads or route centre. |
| Linear settlements | When buildings are either side of a road, in a line. |
