| WEATHER | The day to day state of the atmosphere in a region. It describes the characteristics of the atmosphere with regard to wind, temperature, cloud cover, precipitation, pressure, humidity etc. | 
| CLIMATE | The average state weather in a region. It describes the weather conditions over a long period of time-usually at least 30 years. | 
| CLIMATE CHANGE | Any long-term significant change in the average weather patterns of an area. | 
| GLOBAL WARMING | An increase in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere. Many believe that global warming has been caused by human activities. | 
| GREENHOUSE EFFECT | The trapping of energy by carbon dioxide and other gases which prevent some of the Earth's surface heat from escaping into space. | 
| FOSSIL FUELS | Fuels from the remains of plants or animals eg. coal and oil | 
| RENEWABLE RESOURCES | Resources which can be used over and over again eg. wind; sun; waves | 
| NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES | Resources which can only be used once eg. coal, oil |
