| Question | Answer |
| What is competition in animals? | Animals often have to compete with each other for limited resources. This is known as animal competition. |
| Why do animals and plants compete? | Animals and plants compete for limited resources - the most well adapted ones survive and win |
| What do animals compete for? | Animals compete for: → Food → water → Territory/ space to breed → a partner to breed with. |
| How do animals avoid competition? | Animals avoid competition by: → eating foods which no other animal eats → some animals eat a wide range of foods |
| Why is it important that an animal eats various different foods? | If animals do not eat a wide range of foods, they are more at risk of dying out if that food suddenly becomes unavailable for some reason. |
| Define intraspecific competition | Intraspecific competition is the competition of animals with the same species. |
| Define inter specific competition | inter specific competition is competition of animals with members of a DIFFERENT species. |
| What do herbivores compete for? | Herbivores compete for plants. It is especially important for them to eat a wide range of foods. If they do, they are more likely to be successful. |
| What do carnivores compete for? | → Meat. There is strong intraspecific and inter specific competition. The best adapted are most likely to be successful. |
| Give some adaptations of successful predators. | Successful predators: → long legs for running → sharp eyes and hearing → camouflage - these features are passed down to their offspring. |
| How do prey survive? What adaptations do they have? | → camouflage colouring, so as to not get seen. → good hearing, to hear a predator approaching → warning colours & poisons inside them. |
| What are the two ways that males compete for females? | → DISPLAY: spectacular colours, tails, feathers, etc. Use them to warn other males, too. → FIGHTING: in some species, the males fight between themselves e.g deer, lions. |
| What qualities make a successful competitor in animals? | → adapt to find food and water →must breed → avoid competition →eat things that no one else does → defend territory - some animals mark their territory with urine, or faeces. |
| What are some disadvantages to the methods that some animals use to compete for females? | 1) those who do not have bright colours or a good display won't get the female. 2) those who lose the fight also usually don't end up getting females, either. |
