| Plot | The general scheme or progression of a piece. |
| Connotation | These words, things, or ideas inspired by a word. |
| Denotation | The literal meaning. |
| Oxymoron | Where conflicting words are joined to create a new word or idea. |
| Jargon | Terminology relevant to a particular profession or group of people. |
| Euphemism | When an unpleasant word or image is depicted using another word. |
| Allusion | The reference, in one work of literature, to a person or event in another. |
| Colloquialisms | Generally accepted spoken language. Expressions which are shorthand ways of expressing a situation. |
| Idiom | Where a term is used to express an idea different from the literal meaning of the term. |
| Cliché | An expression that has been used so much it lacks its original sparkle. |
| Pun | Play on words which adds a light-hearted tone to writing. |
| Rhetorical Question | A question that does not require an answer because it is obvious. |
